Net Neutrality Overturned

For people who would prefer to watch a video: Philip DeFranco - The FCC Just Crushed Net Neutrality... It's Not Over, But It Looks Really Bad.

Le Reddit post with on-going discussions and updates: https://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/ ... verturned/

I'm still not entirely sure what this means for the internet as a whole but it's pretty clear that the slippery slope has been laid down for the rest of us.

A loss of 3:2 despite the vast majority of Americans being against this outcome. Apparently one of the voters stood up and made a speech about why NN shouldn't be repealed before voting and she was laughed at by the people in the room, including Ajit Pai. The woman had an "accordion-sized" stack of letters that had been sent to her by Americans and all other voters had similar piles.

It's just insane to me how 5 people can decide shit like this for an entire country despite the wishes of nearly everyone.

For added discussion, Donald Trump reccomended Ajit Pai for the job in the first place.

it's gonna be a few shit years if these ISPs actually go through and start charging premiums, but that's the way politics go. i'm currently with ATT, and if they start pulling shit i'm gonna have to call them and regretfully inform them of my termination of service. I noticed a few days ago my netflix subscription went up ~2 dollars (from 9 to 11), which isnt much, but its obviously a byproduct of them preparing for NN rollbacks and related shenanigans.

From my perspective it's okay if ISPs sell my anonynous search history to make an extra buck, but in this scenario my internet fees should go down, not up, which is obviously not going to happen. Hopefully by 2020 The Trump will be out of office and someone else will come through to reinstate FCC NN regulations.

I understand that regulation = costs for businesses, but they're the ones making the money, so they should just nut up and take the bill on the chin and stop trying to pass it off on their customers. I dont see how that's such a difficult notion to grasp, but here we are struggling with giant wealth disparities as these business moguls deem it fit to wring us dry.

After movements like anti vaccine and flat earth, it's not really surprising they vote to change one of the core characteristics of internet. I think we're going through this era of no one trusts anyone, everyone's an authority on all subjects, so it's all up for grabs. I studied computer science in college, with some work on IPv6, it's been a long time, but my spider senses still thinks without Net neutrality we probably wouldn't have Youtube, Netflix, anything that threatens to grow out of control, the powers that be can now pull the strings, hopefully I'm wrong.

* I know compromises were made to prioritize VoIp, audio and video over other data, and probably some other control protocols have priority, which could maybe be classified as breaking Net Neutrality a long ago. But this now seems to have more potential to muddy the waters.

Another step in the wrong direction for America which favors big business owners and shits on the common citizen. I'd imagine that it must feel like sitting on a rollercoaster you can't get off for the average citizen there.

Within the last year of the new leadership (links from Reddit):
It is legal for coal mining companies to dump waste in rivers/streams, for airlines to not disclose baggage fees, for ISPs to collect and sell user's browsing history and it is legal to poison the ecosystem with lead.

Pretty. Cool. Stuff.

All of these changes favor large businesses and the 1% at the expense of literally everyone else.

It's scary to see this all going down as a Canadian because historically we've been swayed by American decision-making

Fixed that for you.

My guess is what is showcased here will happen, soon, combined with massive extortion of content providers (comcast netflix style) - because now they can do it without going to jail (as they would deserve) so shareholder value doctrine will dictate that they'll have to (or be put in jail by the shareholders for not squeezing every last drop of blood out of the host).

They'll do it, most likely salami style to keep the public docile while the new industry standard is established.

I assume the first company to "step over the line" will get shit on royally like EA did, but once the ice has been broken other IPS will step in with less intrusive deals and point the finger at the original company to say how shitty they are and then it will just be a power creep into oblivion

DC is on thin ice as it is. hell, just in the last two weeks two senators resign for their own reasons (al franken and trent franks) and A kentucky house representative killed himself. in brighter news Doug Jones(D) beat Roy Moore(R) in alabama special election, so the status quo is certainly being shaken all to hell. Hopefully during the 2018 election we can swing some blue seats and break this red majority in the house/senate, but that's still a year away.

You still havn't realized that what you think of as a democracy isn't one: all the people you can effectively vote for have been pre-screened by the fraction of % ones that have successfully stolen roughly 50% of what this planet supplies.

Democrats and Republicans are the same party when it comes to the important stuff, for the question that matters of who gets all the loot they have the same answer: the 'elite'.

For Joe Average it's irrelevant that these two colors differ slightly in the details, the big picture is that he's of no importance and his only role is that of a slave that is to be exploited, no matter if the rulers are blue or red.

I sure ain't going to defend the loss of net neutrality (though I hope it'll be somewhat limited to the USA), but to no small extent you've brought this upon yourselves. When 90% of actual Internet traffic is composed of Facebook and Netflix traffic, it's not overly strange that the service providers are going to want to shape their traffic accordingly. Netflix has already long been installing distribution servers at local exchanges to make up for what the public Internet cannot provide. Obviously, I'm aware this is not the only thing that loss of net neutrality may be abused for, but if it weren't for the fact that the public Internet has, for quite some time now, been so monopolically used by the vast majority of its users, this would most likely not even have been thought of to begin with.

TL;DR: That's what you get for using Facebook.

its not so much that i think "the blue boys will fix it!", so much as red currently holds majority, which isnt cool. I'm just hoping a few blue boys will be enough to break the majority and lock up the houses instead of having all the power in the hands of the president
