As the thread title says.

The low life has lost its appeal
And I'm tired of walking these streets

Yeah, I'm a sucker for that too.

Also John Bauer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bauer_(illustrator)

Most magnificient folk lore alts are related to the Finnish Kalevala!
Some of the most popular ones:

This one is actually HUGE live. Many many meters, as are many other paintings. Its quite fascinating to see them in real life, when you have before seen only pictures of them.
This one, some of the previous and many others are kept in Ateneum, Finnish National art gallery. If you visit Finland/Helsinki someday, paying a visit there is a good idea!

Mind if I ask if you're looking specifically for illumination-style artwork from classical books, or are you looking for any kind of style? I'd like to share a few of my favorites, but don't want to tread upon the styles presented here.

This picture has always reminded me of HnH, I have no idea who made it.
But in the picture, the old white-bearded man is obviously Väinämöinen from Kalevala, playing his Kantele made out of a pike's yaw, with some iconic animals from the Finnish nature gathered around him.
It is actually quite popular subject in paintings, Väinämöinen playing his kantele.

In this picture, Väinämöinen is fighting against a swamp monster/giant/a wise man Antero Vipunen
It reminds me of some of jorb's work with a big green thing in it...

I'd love to see your favorites :)
I'd rather have the thread be about a broader category of images, easy enough to just scroll through and pick out what catches the eye

Definitely, but if people want to keep it to stuff like what's been posted, I'd hate to just take over.

Personally, I've loved Heavy Metal magazine since I was old enough to know it existed (about 10-12*?) and grew up with painters and illustrators like Brom, Julie Bell, Boris Vallejo, Keith Parkinson... just to name a few. Heavy Metal, Lord of the Rings (animated stuff from the 70s, mind you, not the Jackson movies from last decade), and TSR heavily influenced my fantasies and gaming choices.

*Saw it on newstands with comic books and other fantasy-sci fi magazines, but Lord forbid that I got a copy at that age....

Rebbecca Guay does amazing fairy tale, mythical and fantasy inspired art. She's basically my art goddess.

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

I think this Rebecca Guay is ok but overrate. Many of her picture is just of long hair girl.
