3D Printed Guns?

Postby jordancoles » Fri Feb 23, 2018 7:47 am

So I was watching some videos related to gun violence and whatnot and I stumbled on to something I'd never considered before...
3D printed guns.

Another video of a guy making some gun parts with his 3D printer

Maybe it's just the gun-free Canadian lifestyle I'm used to showing, but does this not seem like a major problem that we'll see a lot more of within the next 10 years?
It's possible to make illegal parts/modifications for registered guns or to create whole, undocumented guns through 3D printing.

3D printers are becoming cheaper and more accessible every day and before we know it many households will have them available for family-use.

"Why would anyone make a 3d printed gun, rather then buy one?"

1) Completely untraceable/unregistered
2) Uploading a file to your 3d printer is much easier then machining one yourself
3) Felons or criminals not being allowed to buy a gun by traditional means
4) Not a citizen.
5) Unlimited copies with the potential to sell blueprints or whole printed guns
6) It's a way around restrictive gun laws.

What do you guys think about 3D guns or other 3D printed weapons?
I think that this could potentially make relatively gun-free areas more dangerous.

i still dont understand how 3D printers just magic shit out of nowhere. dont you need the base materials required to make these guns in the first place?

anyways, we need this in areas like chicago. gun free zones are the kind of zones where crime is rampant and no one is safe. basically haven without claim shields.

3D printing works in layers

It builds the entire object from the ground up one thin layer of material at a time

If people wanna hurt each other they will find a way, a 3d gun might make it easier but those who would sit down and 3d print one to hurt someone atm would be very rare, because those who have 3d printers have them to make things and are creative and not violent dumbshits who wanna hurt and kill.

From what ive read, alot of the materials available can make decent guns and can absorb the damage to fire a projectile. With this said do not assume because we can 3d print guns that we cant already make simple projectile weapons easy, as it is right now i could go out to a hardware shop buy some wood and nails and make a simple crossbow that could kill in less time.

atm i use 3d printers for my work and have yet thought about making weapons with them when i can make figures and little items to play with like a little tank or a octopus. The worry is if people who have knowledge of 3D printers saying these things about making guns will scare the retards(politicians) and the simple minded into bringing laws in to restrict the technology because they think we would make guns and kill each other. I saw a version of this with video game violence where idiots went on about how in gta you could kill a hooker and next thing we have some old bastard that should of been in a home was the head of the video games authority in Australia and banned tons of games or made them take out so much stuff the game was neutered and it took a long time to get rid of those stupid laws because they were knee jerk and only hurt the consumers. the people who were making these rules often had no concept of any video games yet were happy to cast anyone who played them are evil and the same can happen with 3D printing if not handled correctly.

and the current technology of 3D printers you have to have a great machine or talent to get it to come out good because of the factors that can stuff up during printing.

Idk, smart people are always finding new and exciting ways to make cash and you'd be surprised how many people would be willing to look the other way on some shady shit if it meant having a bit of income

Sure it'd be rare to find a person 3D printing guns to shoot up schools with, but even if a only handful of people do it, that minority group could potentially supply the local/regional black market for fairly cheap (ignoring the initial setup costs)

PREACH IT BRUTHA!

i agree, its only a matter of time before the jack tompson of 3D printers arrives and blames everything from mass shootings and cancer to papercuts and stubbed toes on 3D printers.

im already cringing at the thought of the bullshit that will spew from said advocates mouth.

You still have to get some ammunition for them, cannot print that.

And getting some ammunition illegally has pretty much the same difficulty as getting a gun illegally.

I have been wondering about that ... so you can't actually use them to fire with then?

You can print the trigger assembly or the stock, but you're gonna have to machine any parts that are in contact with the hot gasses.
