Microsoft bought github

What are your thoughts of it?
Time to move to gitlab?

I have high doubts that anything good will follow from this event.

Too bad ... next year you'll need a Git365 subscribtion then ... :P

I guess moving to gitlab is the way to go ...

Nothing to see here, citizen. Move along.

I'm more surprised that this didn't happen a couple years ago. I don't expect a lot of changes for people looking to get downloads or working off forks, but the devs using the site for storage and commit tracking are probably going to have more restrictive space limits unless they pony up money.

They also have the Atom editor, which probably will be discontinued, because microsoft has lot of their own editors. Having two competing editors would not make sense.
I personally use vim and not atom, but I guess that many other people use atom.
I think that most people are going to change platform to gitlab or such. Its not the first time that microsoft has bought some companies, and we and we can look at how those ended up. (Skype for example)

Skype was crap before MS buyout, though. I know people that used it, and it was popular with the community here, but it was bloatware of the first order.

After Microsoft started using the platform for development stuff a couple years ago, I saw this on the horizon. If I could have bought stock of some sort in GitHub at the time, I would have, and I'd be semi-rich right now after dumping it at the elevated prices that a buyout generates.

I do expect some changes, and so far it doesn't look like MS is going to screw with things much (maybe add in some advertising to recoup investments?) I get why some people are moving off the platform, though, as they haven't been the most reliable guardians. (Only ones worse might be Apple.)

I can't really say I've cared much about Github to begin with, so whatever happens to it wouldn't affect me much. Some people seem to think that I use GitHub to host the client repo, but it's really just a secondary storage for it that I don't really even know why I set up. I keep pushing to it just because some seem to be pulling from it, but I never look at it.

If anything, I've been looking for way to keep bug/issue information directly as part of the Git repos they belong to instead of using files/services that are external to it, but haven't really found anything I've felt totally happy with. It's been some time since I last looked around, though, so it might be time to do so again, but if anyone has something that they're happy with, please feel free to tell me about it.

I think the men watch the puppet and do no caring for the puppeteer. If this Microsoft starts pulling strings badly, the men will find a different show to watch. If they can pull them just as well, then it is just business continues as usual.
