Learn You Some Code on Humble Bundle

Postby TurtleHermit » Wed Sep 26, 2018 9:15 pm

Hello dear hearthlings!

As beginning and somewhat yet motivated beginning programmist, I ask You humbly if purchasing that one is any of worthy.

Link: https://www.humblebundle.com/books/learn-you-some-code-books

As it stands for now, I can probably only afford the 1$ one and I'm mostly interested in Java and somewhat Python and that one with Linux. (shame there's no C#)

As this is very troublesome for young yet not tired spirit, I wanted to ask for... advice? Good word?

Please, no shit talk. :)

Dont waste your money on those. Instead use it to buy some merchandise of your favorite chinese cartoon.

There is plenty of free, better material on the internet where you can learn these things.
You learn to code by coding, not by reading books. Though some theory from books can definitely help.

If you are unable to find help and studying materials from the internet by yourself, you probably are too stupid to code, because you have to learn new things constantly, and first part of learning them is to find good materials.

For me, I much prefer to learn by doing rather than from a book. My coding knowledge is almost entirely self-learned. I find some project I'm interested in, and start attempting to do it. All the needed references and source material can be found online for free.

That being said, I know some people who very much prefer to learn from a more structured book/course. Nothing wrong with this, you just need to know which way suits you better. As for those specific books/courses, I have never used them so can't offer an opinion.

Yes, I'm very aware that "You learn to code by coding" but I'm not a black magician and I search for a good source just to get a kicking start, so I know what expect or not expect while coding.

Yet again, yes I know learning by doing is the best method (and I want to do it that way), I just... don't know, what to know some particular details that such books might contain together with basic knowledge that would be just that first step in that adventure.

If you cant learn it with these its probably better to give up and do something else, such as gender studies.

I honestly doubt those books will contain some hidden gems of knowledge that cannot be found elsewhere. A quick search reveals some very good guides for whichever language you want. The first one I use frequently as a reference, and the second one is a nice introduction to the language with no prior experience required (even taking you through how to setup your IDE).

With a quick glance it looks to be too advanced material for a beginner.

That.

Get a "new" (second hand old crappy one for dirt cheap) computer. Install debian or ubuntu. Write a "hello world" program in C. Compile and run.

Use google whenever you need help. Go from there.

Maybe I'm biased from having a technical background, but I consider myself a beginner in java and this looks very simple to me. It walks you through setting up the IDE and Java, and then starts out with very basic concepts.

A beginner in Java, maybe. But a beginner in programming? Absolutely not.
