We get a lot of shark attacks here some years. This year seems particularly bad. Within the last couple of months there have been four or more attacks. That is a lot considering our population density but maybe not so much considering our beaches see a lot of human activity.
Two of the most recent cases involved a doctor, who died, and a surfer, who fought the shark off.
The death of this doctor seems to have caused quite a stir. Because doctors are oh so important. The debate for drumlines and netting will again come up. Queensland (where the bulk of these attacks have occured) may even consider actively hunting sharks like Western Australia decided to do some years ago.
I'm going to take the side of the sharks on this. The control methods are messy, inaccurate and unnecessary. I'm also going to suggest that if you aren't confident you can fight off a shark just stay out of the water. The water is their home not ours.
In the last hundred years what was once one of the greatest migratory feeding grounds for these creatures has been overfished and polluted. Furthermore rising ocean acidity is rapidly destroying the great barrier reef. These sharks are getting very hungry and it's probably all our fault.
