Snow is nice

Postby shubla » Tue Dec 18, 2018 2:31 am

Finally it seems that it will be a white christmas in southern Finland too! In the last few years there has not been a whole lot of snow, especially during Christmas and new year. But now there is some!

Snow is quite nice, it seems to muffle sounds so it is more quiet, especially when its still in the air, slowly falling down to the ground. Light also reflects off it, so especially in populated areas with streetlights its pretty bright during all times of the day even though usually its quite dark during the winter time.

It also brings out some fond memories of playing with it, building snowmen and cool castles out of it. And perhaps some not-so-nice memories of ice skating in the cold wind during PE-lessons and getting your face "washed" with snow.

Sometimes it is a bit slippery though, especially in areas with lots of traffic, the snow gets pushed to the ground, making it slippery, especially if you don't have proper shoes with good grip in them. Sometimes snowplows also push the snow to the ground, instead of plowing it away, resulting in extremely slippery surfaces.

The air also gets extremely dry during winter, but comparing that to extreme humidity that occurs in some countries, I am not sure if that is any better.

Overall, snow is nice.

I love the winter... or at least I used to. I'm getting to the point that I can't quite enjoy the outdoor stuff like skiing and sledding like I used to, so not sure I like the winter anymore. At least, my allergies aren't as bad in the two winter months as they are in the other ten. (Yeah, we have 3 months of official winter, but it's usually about two of cold here. The other month is semi-cold with a lot of wind. We also only have about a month of spring or autumn... if we're lucky. The rest is almost summer, summer, and Winter Is Coming.)

Ice is horrible, though, unless you have skates on, and it's still horrible because it's never smooth enough for proper use of skates. (Want to see a big man fall flat on his face? Me with skates on anywhere, but especially when the ice isn't smooth!)

Glad I don't live on a street that doesn't get plowed. Bad enough driving behind them. And if the plows are out, shouldn't you be up shoveling that snow out of your drive?

Snow is beautiful if you live in the countryside, waking up to the fields covered in a pure white blanket and glistening under the sun is stunning. I love the woods and forests with all the bare branches of the trees coated in snow and icicles and on a clear night they look even more stunning when they reflect the moonlight, truly magical.

Not so much though living in a town as I do now, within a few days you are just really surrounded by grey sludge and icy paths and roads. :(

Most years we don't really get that much snow, there is always some but it rarely lasts much longer than one or two weeks and then when it does we don't cope well with it in britain, lol, everything comes to a standstill! It's embarrassing tbh when other countries have weeks of deep, heavy snow and manage fine and we get a few flakes and trains stop running, roads aren't gritted or cleared, schools close and shops run out of essentials due to deliveries not being able to get through.

But, all the same, I love the snow too and still build snowmen in my garden if we get enough of it and still go sledging on the hills. :D
