Staying Interested?

Postby Codemanny » Fri Mar 08, 2019 3:27 pm

I'm a hermit because I work a lot and have limited time to play. So, I usually like to envision my tasks to complete before getting home to play for a couple hours on the nights that I can. I hit a stalemate recently. I have a pretty well rounded base and hard metals. Farm fields flourishing. Loads of hides and leathers. Slowly getting wax. You know, the works of a typical functional home base.

Lately however, I log in without any forethought. Now that I have everything built I barely care to grind qualities. Now that I have metal tools and swords I barely care to mine. Knowing my only major need for leather is a minehole, I barely care to get any more leather processed. Considering my 200%-300% hunger range, low consumption needs are met, I barely care to cook more than I need in one session.

I guess my point is, for me, I basically already beat the game. At least, concerning what I am capable of as a hermit with limited time. Whether I grind the stats and qualities or not, my gameplay will barely change from here on out. It's a shame, because I have loved this game passionately. One of my most lofty ambitions for many worlds now was to personally take down a troll. I doubt I'll ever have the time and patience to accomplish that

Oh well. I feel strongly about this so I wanted to at least share my thoughts with the community. Can any of you relate to this??

It's easy to relate. I think most of us being there and sooner or later will hit it again. Early world is great not just because of exploration and new lands, but also because every day feels like noticeable progress. Later it's harder to find something which would make this day any different from the previous one. And even though now it's easier to find some goals (credos, crossing oceans, whatever suits you) the pace still slows down.

But I sort of disagree on the hard metal part. Yes, it's a milestone, but hardly the final one. Jorbtar actually changed the underworld enough this time that almost every layer down feels like a next step, not just another number. More encounters, better metals, harder hole requirements etc etc. I think it's quite viable for a hermit to get into jewelcrafting. And that might take quite some time on its own...

Even with having enough time on my hands to play I run into this wall. Sometimes I just go into "maintenance mode" where I make sure my animals are fed, even to the point of just saving my best breeding pairs.

That's why I play in villages. There's always someone to do something with or to help.

As a hermit -
Scout your world.
Meet your neighbours.
Build something beautiful.

I think unless you have killed all creature and have all item, you can not claim this one. This is even assuming game like this one can be ''beat'' at all.

There is huge amount of work in HnH.
There is always something that you could do to improve your characters/village, at least that is how I feel.

Maybe that’s the problem, it feels like work.

I bet you dont have:
- Credos.
- Ability to hunt big strong animals
- Ability to dig precious metals
- production of cheese, silk
- ability to go to dungeons
- something worth to trade on fair in future
- Deep mines

So yeah, if you think that this game is about planting flax and carrot, and digging chalcopyrite on L1, yeah, it is done for you.
As for me - in w9 I could say with confidence that game have no endgame content, or it is too bored to play.
For the end of w10 i could say that this game have endless endgame content.

I hit the exact same wall and burn out. That's why I set some kind of construction goal for myself, last world i set the bar way too low and completed my task and burnt out. This time I'm shooting way higher and probably won't complete my goal before the work>energy>food cycle gets too tiresome, but i'll hopefully stay engaged for longer than last time
