<rant> Why I didnt like this game

Postby alecciarosewater » Mon Apr 01, 2019 10:28 pm

All I want is a game to poke holes in. Why is this so hard to find

The game advertises itself as a game that tries different things! Great! I would love a game where I can experiment with different approaches and different character builds. I would love a game with player interaction, or a game with fire as a thematic focal point, or a game that is somewhat intuitive to use, or at least a game where I don't have to fight the client to get anything done

Of course the fanbase defends it as per how the autistic internet usually works. I am told that this is meant to be different for "what you're used to" and "i dont know what game you come from". Well first of all I applaud this for being different from what people are used to, which I don't think you clowns appreciate proper. Also I don't know what they mean by "what you're used to". It's true that I don't know what a pre-wow mmo is supposed to look like, because my only experience with pre-wow mmos is bouncing hard off of every private server game I have ever tried. I also don't know what wow looks like, because I despise monoculture and go far out of my way to avoid it.
My reference points for multiplayer games are Freelancer, Neverwinter Nights, the near-defunct Allegiance, and the Freespace 2 modding community. I don't like what the fanbase is implying with "what game you come from".

Meanwhile the players fragment themselves into small, tight-knit discord groups that hide everything while they plot and scheme against each other. It takes a very specific type of individual to let themselves get tied down like this, and if the fanbase wants to whine about pre-wow mmos then they need to recognize that this "very specific type of individual" is not everybody.

and yes i know this dodgy game is a solo dev without a budget. hrm. How do I word this
There are people out there who have sold their house and their 401k so they have money to make the game that they want. Having run into such commitment I consider it perfectly reasonable to weigh small-time projects against big budget devs, and Seatribe is not meeting that standard.

I think i'll go back to dark souls pvp now. It's more pleasant then this

Have a good day.

Addendum:

When I discovered the game nine years ago there wasn't any manual or relevant wiki, it was a black box to figure out.

Since then it has grown in complexity, the early game got steeper and the ways one can paint a character into a corner have increased. The problem for the 'old' players (and especially the developers) is that they know stuff, the can't have a first time anymore as they overlook (since they automatically step over) the stones you stumbled over.

Having read through your posts you pointed out a lack of direction (like missing the pool in the starting area to change appearance) and the lack of community. The former could (and hopefully will, at some point) be addressed by better in-game tutorials. The latter is a problem that'll only solve itself one funeral at a time, there are quite some extremely decent people playing the game but an encounter with someone that isn't can ruin the experience.

In case you have more that you can point out with your fresh eyes: please enlighten us.

No, Haven isn't for everyone. Yes, there's a lot of problems. Everyone acknowledges it. The upside of indie games is that you get some really interesting ideas and a "pure vision" of what a game could be, and see things that are interesting for some that wouldn't make it through playtesting in major productions. The downside is you have very few people working on it... too few, even. Ideas never get realized fast enough, bugs don't get fixed fast enough. Other problems can persist for years. It's a labor of love, not profit. If you don't love it, then at least good luck to you in the search for the "great game" you can play for years to come.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

This is just plain dull to play in a way that can't be put into words easily. I know what a slow-paced multiplayer game looks like, and the slow moments are generally more interesting then this was

For what it's worth I did like the soft/hard HP system which encourages caution over the usual all-or-nothing yolo
