Guided missile weaponry is just another form of artillery. It's just gotten bigger and bigger over the last century... well, too a point. There's only so big you can make a nuclear weapon and be practical to deploy.

They are much more advanced than artillery and this is their weakness. Any war between global superpowers will begin with an assault on the satellites these missiles need for guidance. I'd be interested to know how many nations have been training their militaries to operate without satellite support systems like GPS etc...

Without satellites, missiles begin to rely on more rudimentary means of guidance like laser painting. To paint a target with a laser you need to be able to get close to it. The painters also make "noise" which can be traced. Missiles will provide only limited functionality in any conflict with a near peer. Reliance on air superiority and ground forces, including artillery and air defence systems, are likely to be much more effective in any modern conflict against a near peer.

> Wikipedia: Artillery is a class of heavy military ranged weapons built to launch munitions far beyond the range and power of infantry firearms.

I guess in that case "Artillery" includes all missiles/projectiles (guided or unguided) that are to big to be carried by general infantry troops.

Another lander reaches the moon, we will find out soon if the sample return mission is successful.

Independence day creeps closer and the propaganda tightens! Too bad that we don't have any big ships to show off with, but instead some small small boats.

What a dedication for something that is completely scientificality irrelevant.

The USA planted the USA flag,
Now China plants the Chinese flag.
(If you count crash-landed flags, the Soviets were the first btw) lol

For real civilized civilisation one might expect some Earth flag to be planted on the Moon.
One little problem ... there is no official Earth flag yet. (go figure. probably related to alpha dogs & scent marking habits)

not to Mention the debris. Whatever satallites they might miss or otherwise fail to destroy will be damaged beyond usability by the small debris traveling several km/s around the earth. And if Peace ever returnes to the Surface spacetravel will be nearly impossible.

There's a name for this--Kesseler Syndrome.

To go a different direction (and connect to a different thread), it's been speculated we may be able to identify planets with dead civilizations simply by observing orbital debris fields.
