Sandbox Games by Independent Scandinavian Developers?

Check out Starbase:

From Finland, by the nearly 100 dev studio called Frozenbyte, which began with the cooperative platformer called Trine, expanding over the years to nearly a dozen titles. They have been working on this game which I can only imagine is the wet dream of one (or multiple) of their execs. Why do I think that? Frankly MMOs are basically prohibitively expensive to develop and populate with content.

Looks cool though. The game and virtually every feature is extensively documented on YouTube, both by the dev studio and the community in the closed alpha, which has no NDA.

Scandinavia Developers have caused too much damage to the society and are contributing to The Fall of Western Civilization by releasing products that can be consumed aimlessly, effortlessly and are degenerating the young minds. Keep Consuming The Scandinavian Product.

We wouldn't play it if it weren't horribly addicting! :)

I was invited to Alpha for Starbase a few months ago (no NDA).
Although the game is short on content, it's quite fun. The engine works well, although the netcode is mostly Peer to Peer which I think is unfortunately going to have issues once they get into competitive PvP situations and people start abusing/hacking. Too much client authority has been a huge issue in many games, even Triple A ones like GTA Online and Red Dead Online. All it takes is one person to spawn in a bunch of high value goods and ruin the economy.

The spaceship design and sandbox elements are phenomenal. Building optimized miners and various sized fighters is both fun, complex, and amazingly deep. Creating automated scripts using their YOLOL system is incredibly complicated and rewarding. However, the game does not yet have a complete gameplay loop to incentivize PvP. There's little reason to currently leave the "safe zone" that contains the starter NPC controlled stations and basic mining belts. There's no reason to colonize deep space at all.

It'll be a while before the potential is realized, and a few road bumps (P2P anti-hacking) along the way.
