Getting back into H&H -- what's changed since 2016?

Postby Vertine » Fri Mar 26, 2021 5:12 pm

Hey y'all,

Me and some friends are looking to get on board with the new world when it launches next week. We've played in probably 4 or 5 worlds off and on between 2010 and 2016, but we haven't played since fall of 2016 (whatever that world was).

Obviously jorb/loftar have detailed changes in the announcements forum, but I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to point out any of the more substantial changes that have occurred within the last 4-5 years. I don't mind exploring and finding out little things on my own, but I'd like to know about any massive gameplay changes ahead of time if possible.

Thanks!

There are too many changes to list I think. Oceans is probably a new thing?

You can find comprehensive list of changings here.

Off top of my head, big ticket items are realms, credos, quests, seasons, oceans, gildings, alchemy, new siege/combat mechanics x5 (and still they remain unpopular).

Gilding in particular is a massive game-changer regardless of playstyle. Most equipment now no longer gives stat/skill bonuses, but instead have gilding slots you can 'gild' gilding items into which gives stat/skill bonuses to equipment. Proper use of the gilding system allows you to gild multiple gildings on a single equipment for more bonuses. You'll want to read up on it and experiment with it as it's essential especially early-game.

Can't Palibash anymore, as long as the palisade is fully dried and under active claim. Unclaimed palisade is actually easier to bash now.

They made "push-out" -mechanic so that one-pixel collision with a tree doesn't bring you to a complete stop.

Added ships, and later made that they spawn wreckage that you can cling unto in hopes of someone rescuing you.

Read http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Hearth_Fire for changes to hearthing.

World generation changed drastically, see for yourself (That's W12) :

You now have oceanworthy boats like the snekkja and the knarr. Rowboats have to be tar'd to be functional, but can't go on the ocean for more than a few seconds before exploding.
Seasons, of course. Winter is 5 days, spring and autumn are 10 days, summer is 30 days. My guess is that the new world will start in spring. If Jorbtar feels particularly cruel, winter. :P
Caves have received a lot of love, now has 9 levels.
Many, many, many items added.
You can smoke raw meats (in a smoke shed, not with a pipe)
A complete system of alchemy.
Much more

To name a few:

Localized Resources
Realms
Cooking/spicing rework(s)
Bees are not fun to get now
whirlpools/oceans/whales
combat revamp, although mostly refining the system back from 2015
multilayer caves, "militarization of the underground", gems
dungeons
seasons and related content
alchemy

Full time dev-ing started around then, so the pace of new content picked up dramatically.
