Combat tutorials?

Postby alioli » Wed Apr 14, 2021 11:16 am

Hello!
Long time casual player (Even before the 3d version ;))
With the old combat system, I could beat ants no problem and was able to almost be able to tackle the goats as well
But I stopped playing around the time the combat got completly reworked, and now I have NO idea how to even begin to understand the combat system.
Is there any, preferably video tutorials that focus more on the mechanics of the combat system, rather than the number crunching?

Well in short, you spam punch until the target dies.
After you have gained some better moves and weapons, you start spamming quick barrage-move.

To hunt you can hunt from boat and use de-aggro trick.

quick tutorial:

step 1: craft yourself a bucket
step 2: fill bucket with drinkable juice
step 3: find ant hill
step 5: make combat deck and save it
step 6: there is no 4 also aggro one ant
step 7: depending on agility hit ant once or twice with punch and run away
step 8: lower your openings
step 9: drink water
step 10: repeat 7 to 9 until ant is dead

this is most basic tutorial for combat. later just get some leather armor to kill bats or foxes on wild horse then unloack quick barrage and profit. more advanced techniques you need to ask topkek fighters who kite and cheese shit out of this game

Ants are indeed the best thing to get hang with combat, if you find anthill next to water it's 100% safe since ants can't enter even shallow water.

I think you need 10 UA or so to kill ants reasonably.

Other than practice, you benefit from ant-killing by learning moves, some token LP and if you kill them all, you can raid the Anthill itself for decent (if you get lucky, good) loot.

The basics are pretty easy to understand. Punch creates green openings so that green attacks can do damage(punch happens to do both, so you can spam it alone). You need use restorations like quick dodge, sidestep, and jump to reduce your own openings so you don't get damaged.

You are going to get damaged if you try face tanking anything that you don't out-stat heavily, so you will need to cheese things. This is all about putting yourself in a position where you can't be attacked while you reduce your openings. There's a few methods. Using a boat is a popular one. You lead an animal to the shore and simply move into deep water whenever you need to reduce openings. You can use caves or houses as well by leaving the area to reduce your openings. You can also simply run away from something while reducing your openings if you are faster than it (ants, beavers if you are in a rowboat). A bucket of water helps restore your stamina while run kiting (though, I would avoid this method for hunting because it drains energy quickly). Using these strategies is key to not taking damage.

You will notice most animals will flee when they are damaged. Animals can be reaggroed by first dropping your aggression, then by attacking them again. I find it easiest to pre-emptively check the deaggro button (I've never paid attention to what it's actually called) and be ready to use the attack command on the animal whenever you hit it.

You will learn more combat moves as you defeat animals. Mix different combinations to see how the moves interact with each other. Keep in mind that UA attacks do flat damage while MC attacks scale with the weapon. Your skill does not effect this damage, only the amount of opening created. It also happens that a lot of UA attacks are really good at creating openings. For this reason, a high UA builds that create openings using UA attacks like uppercut are popular when mixed with damaging MC abilities like sideswipe. Same idea goes for KITO + cleave which does AOE damage. These are mainly PVP combos, though. For hunting, try a boar spear + quick barrage if you want a really easy time since you can simply attack while safely in deep water. When in doubt, punch will get the job done, slowly.

I'll consider making some tutorial videos, not sure when but if there's interest I could. Some topics you'd like me to cover would be helpful though

The combat system itself could probably use some improvement if using it the way its intended (face tanking the animal as Zampfeo mentioned) is less ideal than cheesing them.

Like i said in another thread aslong as animals flee faster then a player there will never be any point in not cheesing them. Rethinking the fleeing system itself would be a easier stopgap since its either exploit it or use horse/1shot

For sure, I certainly agree with that. If you are not using a boat or horse to kite the animals that outrun the player then there is very little recourse in such a situation when you lack the stats and/or the combat moves to be capable of handling that mob's momentum.

I think the simplest combat advice one can give is that all you have to do is out-stat the things you are fighting and there will be very little to worry about. Personally, I do not see any reason to put points in to marksmanship at all because this often only helps you out for a bit in the early game until your unarmed or melee combat reach a point where you can kill something faster than it is able to get openings on you.

I'd bet that if you take a look around any mountain you will find various palisades that are being utilized to kill goats and wolves, and if it's not already happening eventually mammoths too.
