How much storage is a World file?

1. How much is the storage of the world at the beginning? 2. Storage at the peak? 3. Storage at the end? 4. Current world size of W14? Any questions answered would be nice.

The map files for World 14 were 1.5 GB initially. They currently weigh in at 2.1 GB, but part of that is also really just because backups are being created, I don't think they've really grown quite that much. The map files for World 13 were 3.0 GB at the end, and other data that grows over the course of the world (like characters) was another 1.0 GB.

It is perhaps worth noting that the map files are also compressed while stored, however. The compression ratio differs for different parts of the map; for instance, the cave maps compress significantly better than the overworld maps. If they were uncompressed, I would estimate that the starting maps for World 14 would have been somewhere around 60-100 GB.

Wow that's really cool, how does the compression work so good?

It's just standard zlib compression, but when you have cave maps where probably around 90% of tiles are the same, it tends to compress pretty well. ;)
