I'm considering (no decision having been made yet) whether it might be time to upgrade the server hardware. The SSDs in the current server have always been a bit flaky performance-wise, and a newer CPU probably wouldn't hurt anything either. I will admit the prospect of having to let the server sleep for an unknown amount of time unnerves me a bit, but it might be time.
Getting a new server from Hetzner these days, however, leaves me the choice of choosing between their German or Finnish datacenters. The Finnish datacenter is cheaper, but nowhere near by an amount that would cause me to choose it for that reason. Much more than that, I'm concerned about the ping times for people from various parts of the world. I don't have any data to go off to determine whether the Finnish datacenter would be better or worse than the German datacenter. Is there anyone who has experience with Hetzner who might know anything about this?
If you want to try the latencies yourselves, Hetzner apparently has ping test servers at fsn.icmp.hetzner.com for the German datacenter, and hel.icmp.hetzner.com for the Finnish one. For me, being in Sweden, the Finnish datacenter is significantly better at 8 ms vs. 26 for Germany, but I'd be curious to see if there's a significant difference (either way) for other people.
If no obvious advantage can be seen for the Finnish datacenter, I'd be inclined to choose the German datacenter just to not change anything unexpectedly for anyone, but feel free to opine.
