unarmed, is there a use for it?

Postby altabuse » Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:35 am

Finally got some semblance of a home and getting some curios in.
Making a fighting alt for animals and what not and I go onto the wiki and look at the moves and whatnot for the combat system. Is unarmed even a thing? not to mention when all the player fights you see on youtube, I do not see any of them without a sword or shield or something.

Do players even use Unarmed?

You can use unarmed with both arms armed.
Answering question: yes, UA is more than viable. The only thing it lacks is heavy damage, that's why everyone mix it with melee.

the question between unarmed/ melee combat isnt about not using weapons.
its about 2 handed weapons, or carrying a shield.

UA/MC dont change the damage you do with your moves. those are dependant on weapons, or handslot items, like lynx gloves or knuckle dusters.

they only dictate how much opening you do. and how effective your maneuvers are at setting your base defences.

so somebody with 500 ua. still wants a big two handed axe to cleave you, after he opened you on red with his punches.

the usual laymans breakdown is that, MC is better for cheesing animals. people with small stats, cause shields equalize quite a bit, and people with low tec levels, as UA significantly spikes after getting steel.

whereas UA is giving you a better beatstick overall, if your stats are insane, and you have more flexibility, in terms of meneuvers you can utilize.

there is more depth to it than that, but thats the basics for the average hermit.

I cannot answer to the unarmed part of it but as far as getting off to a good start with hunting/combat there is this:

Unarmed is usually used in PvP, as the stances are typically better for defenses and what you do with them, moreso in later game when people are running a B12.

As far as hermits and Sprucecaps go, 10-15 is all you'll need, which you'll use to punch bats until you unlock melee moves. You'll use melee pretty much exclusively, as you can simply cheese everything from range and things never get to hit you back. Shield up is pretty good, especially if you're lower statted than what you're fighting, but means no B12.

Once you've got Quick barrage (Coin gain + opener) and Full circle (Damage dealing), you can cheese every animal in the game, assuming you've got a good enough weapon with some STR. OppKnock is the only thing you might use, which is technically an unarmed move, but typically don't even need that.

Cleave is better for hunting than Full Circle IMO, since you cheese hunts the CD doesn't matter and Quick Barraging 6 coins after it re-aggroes is fine since you need to increase the opening anyways.

I start using cleave when my gear/stats gets high enough to 1 or 2 cleave things to death. But QB=> Op Knock => Full circle does pretty well too since they keep the max opening when you reaggro them unlike coins which you lose.

I actually bow hunt things i have to re-aggro, and cleave things i can outrun in a boat/horse. Its sick stacking 12 coins and running animals down with the increase damage from Hunter Credo.
