OBS issue

Postby Valgaav1 » Sat Jan 14, 2023 5:47 pm

So I've been trying to record a bit, and for some reason the video that makes it to OBS is much more stuttery than the game.
This doesn't effect the cursor capture, and isn't an encoding issue since it's the same while viewing it in OBS without recording.
I have done some of the obvious things (run as admin, turn up priority, mess with framerate) without it helping.
I know there's a small number of people who record/stream so I'm wondering if there's a common solution for this or if this isn't a normal problem?

What settings are you using?
How do you encode it? Do you encode using your GPU? What GPU do you have?
Bitrate?
Framerate?
Resolution?
Are you recording the screen, or the game window itself?
Are you running other apps in the background that could impact performance?
Are you using a HDD or SSD?
What exactly have you tried to record? Was it a crowded area such as the middle of your industry/animal pens?

Did you try to record lake reeds? Lord have mercy on our souls.

Post your PC specs if you can.

1920x1080
30fps (also tried 60 to match screen refresh, didn't help)
High Quality, Medium File size
Encoder: Hardware (NVENC, H.264)
Renderer: Direct3D 11

Using Game capture, specific window.
Running
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8086K CPU @ 4.00GHz 4.01 GHz
Graphics: 1080 ti

I don't believe it's an encoding issue since it seems to be happening in the preview window, and doesn't effect the cursor. Can literally watch the game freeze on OBS (but not the actual game window) but still see the cursor move around as normal.
Recording started in character creation and was mostly wilderness.

what client mainly is the question. ard bootleg does this thing where it lowers its framerate significantly when game window isnt focused, this might be your issue.
its in settings and can be adjusted easily.

Before trying everything else, try to capture your screen, rather than game capture. Hafen behaves extremely retarded when apps are focusing on it.
For example, trying to stream the game window (rather than your entire screen) on Discord will literally crash Discord. If your PC is old enough, it will fucking freeze. Don't ask me why, ask loftar.

If the problem persists after changing from game capture to screen capture:
Keep in mind that the preview window will sometimes act stupid to preserve resources, especially when not focused. That happens for me too, with a 3080-ti
Have you also checked the result video? Does that also lag?

My recommendation is to also use the advanced output settings.
File -> Settings -> Output -> At the top of the screen, change "Output Mode" from Simple to Advanced.

In the Recording tab, try using something like this (I adjusted them for GTX 1080 ti, 1920x1080):

If your recorded video (not preview) still lags, you can try lowering the bitrate.
I used to record 60 fps videos on my old PC, with a GTX 750, so you can definitely record videos. OBS is literally the best quality-performance wise.

Also, as lordgrunt mentioned, the client can affect performance by half.
Ardennes' bootleg of a bootleg whatever client is using the old render code. Ender's client for instance, is using the new render.
New render clients literally have twice as much FPS than old render clients.

Let me know if it still lags for you after trying this stuff.

Switching to display capture seems to have fixed it. now i just need to block out the taskbar before more recording.
Thanks.
