How do I get the tapeworms out of my rabbits?

Postby MikeOfDragon » Sat May 31, 2025 12:50 am

Almost every rabbit from my hutch has tapeworms. Out of the last approximately 15 I've cleaned, only 1 has not had a tapeworm. Do I need to get new rabbits and start over?

Apparently the causes of tapeworm and deepworm is a contentious topic, with a growing theory that eating the former meat causes the latter.
But yeah, it definitely sounds like there's a hereditary or at least proximity based connection. Maybe even fodder.

I'd start over, while keeping the infected colony for testing.

Let us know what happens, especially if you eat the meat and later develop deepworm :)

Have you fed your rabbits any animal products?

That might be the vector. Mine only get the surplus from my crops farming, and they haven't had a tape worm yet. I have only got tapeworms in this world from butchering wild game.

I'd start by taking all the old swill out of their hutch and putting them on an animal product free diet and see if that reduces the number of tape worms you are getting. I'd also make sure to never slaughter in the hutch or leave dead bunnies in the hutch, but that's overkill because I am a larper. I suspect you need new bunnies if you want to get rid of the tapeworms however.

I have no idea if that will help, but that is what I would experiment with, as the devs may be modeling the spread on the way it spreads in real life.

... gosh, I hope they don't introduce hookworm into the game!!

I'm 99% sure I did get a tapeworm from eating infected meat when starting out a few weeks ago (it's been a few worlds since the last time I played so I was not aware about the mechanic, just thought "Oh cool, new curio" and ate the tainted meat lol.) And I am not sure I did not feed the rabbits any tainted meat. I definitely fed my cows and sheep and horses with meat that was tapeworm infected but large animals do not get tapeworms from what I can tell.
