I have a character with 35 farming and I really like the automation added to make farming easier.
However, with the way seeds work now (as a substance like water) if the quality formula is the same or similar to what it was in w7, just harvesting a crop using the new automation, over time you crops will all be under 10 quality forever.
If you don't use automation and farm one tile at a time then deposit the seeds and sort them only planting the higher quality ones, then maybe, eventually, your crops will start to increase in quality. Well at least in one dimension of quality. But maybe they wont.
With beetroots (which avoids all the seed mixing concerns since you just harvest and plant the food) I've seen my quality dropping across the board just replanting and expanding the crop. After 3 or 4 replants so far I haven't seen any real gains in quality. One of the qualities might increase slightly while the others drop on one harvest, then switch around and drop on the next. There is no steady progression.
The soil is 10 45 10 and within the radius of a beehive.
Everyone's advice is:
a) Raise your farming more
b) Sort your seeds better
c) Oh that's just bad RNG
d) Your soil is crap, plant somewhere else
None of these help and doesn't touch on the fact that the unknown growth formula, combined with the lack of nature slider, combined with the complexities of the new quality dimensions might mean farming just doesn't work. At least not like it use to. It hasn't been fun so far.
