All ores are stones, but not all stones are ores. Try creating a new stockpile with one; ores give an ore stockpile, non-ore stones give a stone stockpile. (You can put ores into a stone stockpile and use them as stone in crafting recipes or as stone building materials. You can even pave with them.)
