My group has had a lot of luck but it's just that, luck. There are no tools or resources you can use to find your friends besides kinning, partying, and hoping for the best as Granger stated.

When sending private messages ingame to kin and such, your avatar used to turn toward the direction of the char you targetted. Iunno.

It doesn't work. Avatar didn't turn when i private message to my kin.

To be honest I dont find payment that annoying even though I dont think I can afford more than 15$ paid once so I probably wont play a lot becouse I think devs deserve it, Jorb and Loftar did a lot of great work, but this stuff with being unable to find friends is IMO really, really bad thing. I mean this game looks awesome and I'd really love to try playing in our community but there's no way to find guys I wanna play with w/o using most of limited time I have. So only thing that's left is actually wait saving precious time and have hope that in some time solution will be found (update? hidden option of finding friends? I dunno)

They really have to get something better, because right now "shut it off and wait for them to fix it" is the best advice I've heard for this very large problem.

That or my suggestion: remove the distance check on the pointer arrows. I'd feel a lot better knowing I was at least walking towards my friend.
