dowsing rods, how do they work?

decided to make a dowsing rod to see what the well options were on my potential claim. equipped it as normal, the arrow flashed red like normal, walked towards the larger side of the arrow like normal... and about 3-4 tiles over, it suddenly flashes in a completely different direction! and this happens no matter where I walk! and i've romped all over this godforsaken field and haven't seen a single spot of water! what gives?! i don't know!

but yeah has someone figured out how finding water works yet?

I'm trying to figure this out aswell. I don't live anywhere near a river/lake, so I'm trying to construct a well. But the Dowsing rod seems bugged, it doesn't work the way it does before and I end up running in a circle.
