Once the fire is lit, just right-click branches into fire anf they will instantly become firebrands. Just click them into your inventory and you got the ash. You can make tons of ashes with little effort, provided you gather enough branches/blocks

wow burn bones in a kiln get burnt bones then right click them and they get the "crumble" option and you get a large .2~+ ash pile

You can burn bread in an oven. Made a loooot of ash that way on the test server.
