Holy hell, I think I've figured it out. I'll be testing my theory out today and if I'm correct I'll post a guide.

This doesn't guarentee a cave in. I'm an utter scrub and found a bit of coal. I think that's just an indication that the tile isn't supported (can confirm if I ever get metal).

I think the old zigzag mining is probably the safest still. Safe enough to be worth on layer 1, maybe not deeper.
