Hunting help

I've been trying to hunt for a bit via shooting from my boat with a bow and arrow but I'm coming into problems sometimes where the arrow will just instantly fumble and won't shoot or it will just disappear from the inventory without making any sounds like dropping into the water. What am I doing wrong? Is there a better way i should be utilizing to hunt ?

Boats now block arrows. This means no hunting from a boat 90% of the time.

I've been doing it by aggroing a mob to a wide cliff and shooting down at them (takes a bit of camera fiddling to get the aim at the mob and not the cliff above).
