Mine Supports.

So I was very curious about something recently.

If I was to clear out an area in my level 1 mine hole, could I remove the mine supports without it causing any cave ins so I could make a small base down there?

Not with a character you cared about, if the mine support has ever prevented a cave in then it will cause one when you destroy it even if you build another one to cover the same area first.

I placed the supports within the red circle that protrudes from the ladder down so would that be a problem?

Could be a problem still if you mined outside that area and there was a cavein within the remaining support radius.

So you're saying if I break them and not mine anymore tiles that they are holding up it won't cause a cave in?

If you have mined under them and had dust fall down since they were up then they will cause a cave in when you remove them, if that hasn't happened then they won't.

It was repeatedly suggested to the devs to change the mechanics of minesupport removal to something sane - so we could remove a support without a cave-in as long as all the unstable tiles (protected before by the removed support) are still supported by other supports - but they chose to keep the current bad mechanic.
