How do I reliably open the gridiron?

It is consistently not opening in multiple tries, although I have managed to open it twice. It's not working as often as once in thirty tries, from different angles.

I usually get the choice of use or remove, but want to open the menu that shows the meat cooking.

Have been trying to click the metal bars, as clicking the brazier consistently gives the use and remove options.

Okay, so if I get use or put out I am clicking the brazier
If I get use or take I can choose use and it works.

use/remove only appears if the gridiron is empty. keep a piece of meat on it and you'll never see it
