How do I explain wtf happened here...

So I'm mining in my minehole and I open up a natural cave gallery.

As the gallery opens, a cave in happens a little bit to my east, the open gallery to my west.

The cave in completely misses me, I think to myself "damn that could have been dangerous if I was standing over there."

But then I assess... and begin scratching my head.

Not only did the cave in happen a significant distance away from where I was actually mining, it also happened right on top of a full-health, active support beam.

By my understanding of the way mining works, this should be impossible.

Someone please explain what happened here.

I mean this is an impressively unhelpful picture. I assume that you were mining outside the radius of the support? Possibly there was another support and it collapsed or you mined outside its radius?

Caveins can land quite far away from the tile that triggers them, so I suppose that includes inside the radius of an unrelated support.
