Question: When can dugouts take damage?

I just drowned in a cave river using a 50% dugout.

My boat just disappeared and I couldn't swim back.

My question is why did this happen?

Every object made by players, if they are outside personal or village claim, can and will absolutely randomly take decay hits. This mechanic is absolutely unpredictable, but at your situation you just extremely unlucky. Dugouts have very low amount of HP, so they can decay in one or two random hits.

Someone stole my rowboat I had parked, so I used the dugout I had left there weeks ago.
