Most IMPACTFUL crop?

Postby Carl_Winslowns » Tue May 26, 2026 10:05 am

I queried via the forum search for Farming guides or just general farming info but couldn't find anything pertaining to my very specific inquiry. That being, I want to know what would be the most IMPACTFUL crop to grow or farm. This adjective is a bit ambiguous for a reason...because it implies that I want to know in people's opinion, what crop when produced is the most meaningful when factoring 1) the in-game economy 2) the in game world in terms of what it's biproducts are used for in terms of crafting or as a resource 3) what is in the most demand regardless of it's use (this could possibly be drugs like hemp or poppy). All of those factors accounted for, I'd like to know what is the most IMPACTFUL crop to grow on a massive scale.

Note: I will NOT accept Tansy because then that would be a troll as Midges are not significant enough to warrant growing an entire plant just to counteract their annoyances.

Thank you,

Have a good evening, afternoon, morning or night.

Cheers,

Carl.

I'd say its gotta be Shartsvald, useful for its Shartvald flour and Shartvald post curio, with Druidic Rite it really starts ripping ass, and planting it just once yields incredible amounts of FEP content

One of the "Key Performance Indicators" for a Haven group used to be the number on their Flax Seeds.

It definitely still matters, but all the tweaks and reworks on how Farming works have made it significantly less important/mandatory to "poopsock" your crops.

If someone manages to get (let's use an arbitrary number) q400 flax, anyone can just get 400 Farming and forage WWWs until they get one that's q400 and then simply dry it into Flax Seeds.

That depends, what are your goals, your current stage in the game, what world you play on.

You should have a small part of the farm dedicated to quality boosting all crops in case an update patch makes a particular crop in demand or for when you reach a stage in the game where you would like to mass produce it so you wouldn't have to start from scratch.

Speaking generally, crops separate in to fibers, grains, "food" and other (pipeweed, poppy).

I would recommend having at least one kind of fiber (flax or hemp) to cover all your string and cloth needs and one kind of grain (wheat, barley, millet) for straw, I would say those are the most impactful early game. For the rest, identify your goal (improving a certain stat, making curios, feeding animals, etc), look up the details for all crops on the wiki then plant accordingly.

As mentioned in previous comments, black pepper gets a special mention as a universal FEP boosting spice if pushing stats is a goal. But eating too much pepper deals damage and can cause death if not paying attention.

All that said, a month in to a worlds life and any competent hearth player should have all their needs of all crops and any excess goes in to feeding animals. So none particularly impact the games economy. I'd say high quality trees have more impact for making better tools and stations.

Trees are indeed the most important ... so then, perhaps, the 'most impactful' becomes the one you can feed to the compost bin?

When I was playing with people who were good at hunting (RIP Bala, Mys and Jakkar, they're not dead they just quit) we were feeding mammoths and bears to the compost bin. Now I've got a bunch of crops better than most of those animals (thanks to Mys for doing a lot of that farming, thanks to whoever grew the beetroot I just found in a WWW that is now my best crop) so it's a lot easier to feed the bin, but harder for me to make a new bin because the chickens aren't good enough to make top-q bone glue.

I don't find one crop more 'impactful' than the next, really, but I'm a filthy casual who doesn't care about optimal gameplay. I really appreciate the ones you can split into multiple useful things like pumpkins and lettuce, though, because that gives me lots of fodder for my animals.
