He probably thought that mating with Bob Dole (instead of big village) will make him relevant, and now when Bob's dead he understood that this possibility is lost. There's nothing wrong with willing to somehow still get the part of fallen glory. It's just the feeling of regret that it's over, I guess - not a bad character feature
