You can effectively 'stomp ground' in forest biomes while holding a stockpile item, without having to plow it first. Doing so seems to cost a number of held stockpile items, either in hand or inventory.
I don't know if it's exclusive to forest biomes, have not tested.

The effect is replicable following these steps;
• hold stockpile-able item, right click to activate placement
• hold shift, right click ground
• watch ground change

I can't re-create with current instructions, did you forgot to include something with the "Stomp Dirt" like starting the entire process with shovel cursor from selecting said action?

(Another possibility is that Loftar spaghetti somehow hooks up with a function intended to activate the AoE snow removal, which does not have Adventure Menu action, and is instead accessed by right-clicking a snow tile (to get the shovewl icon) then dragging the desired area (click+hold+drag left-mouse.))

After re-testing, I think Nightdawg is right. I was placing stones, raising the ground. I confused the visuals with 'stomp ground' as I was creating a dirt path when first discovering the effect.
