1. Check that your PC can actually reach the game‐patch servers
Test What to do Expected
Ping ping 46.4.95.116 (or ping http://www.havenandhearth.com) < 100 ms and no packet loss
HTTPS Open https://game.havenandhearth.com/java/launcher-ext.jar in a browser File download prompt

If either test hangs or times out, the launcher will time‑out too.

Quick fixes – try in turn until one works

Switch to a public (“real”) IPv4 address or tether through a phone hotspot. One player fixed the problem immediately after his ISP assigned a public IP instead of CG‑NAT.

Enable a VPN or WireGuard tunnel (any exit node in Europe works best).

Change DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 and flush your resolver cache.

2. Purge stale launcher‑ and client‑side caches
Old resource files can break the hash check and force the launcher to re‑download the 36 MiB resource bundle every time—often timing out half‑way.

Close the launcher completely.

Delete the two folders below (they are automatically re‑created):

shell
%APPDATA%\Haven and Hearth
%APPDATA%\Haven Launcher
(Replace %APPDATA% with ~/.local/share on Linux.)
3. Relaunch and let the bar crawl slowly past 10 MiB; users report the final 20 MiB can take 30–40 min on a slow route, but it will finish if the connection stays up.

3. Whitelist Java and the launcher in security software
“SocketTimeoutException almost always means the connection is being blocked locally or dropping packets.” – MagicManICT (H&H moderator)

Actions:

Add java.exe, javaw.exe, haven.exe and Hafen.exe to the allow‑lists of Windows Firewall, Defender, and any third‑party AV.

Temporarily disable HTTPS‑inspection features in “web‑shield” type products.

4. Update the runtime & graphics driver (yes, both matter)
Component Minimum known‑good
Java OpenJDK 17.0.11 LTS or Oracle JRE 17.0.11 (64‑bit)
nVidia 551.86 (new) or 472.12 (stable fallback recommended by the devs)
AMD 24.3.1 WHQL

Several players fixed the launcher after simply installing the current LTS JRE and rebooting.

5. Alternative launch methods if the built‑in updater still fails
Method How to use it When useful
Direct JAR launch Download autohaven.jar from http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/autohaven and run java -jar autohaven.jar Bypasses the graphical “blue bar” launcher entirely—handy when only the downloader is failing
Community launchers Ender, Mudclient, Ardclient, etc. These have their own updaters/CDN mirrors and sometimes succeed when the vanilla launcher doesn’t.
Re‑compile with a longer timeout In open‑source forks (Cache.update0), increase connection.setReadTimeout(15000) and setConnectTimeout(15000) to e.g. 60000; rebuild with ant or gradle. For power users who want a permanent fix on spotty links.

6. Low‑level network tweaks (rarely required)
Force IPv4: add -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true to the launcher’s JVM arguments.

Disable QUIC/HTTP3 on whole‑PC firewalls that mishandle fallback.

Drop MTU to 1400 on VPN adapters that fragment TLS packets.

Putting it all together
Most “press Play → nothing happens” cases disappear after Steps 1–3.
If yours doesn’t, use Step 5 A (direct JAR) as a quick workaround while you continue to chase the root cause.

...and downloaded https game havenandhearth com/java/launcher-ext jar as a test
Tried my old downloaded default launcher, ender, kami and steam - they all behave unstable but same: most of times return error while checking/fetching something like "gluegen....", sometimes (1 out of 10 times) they manage to pass this stage so I even can log in - but then "play" button from game menu (with character icons) does nothing. (checked it dozens of times - interesting that I can log out from it and log in back quite fast and as many times as I want - it wasn't possible before because of random "endless authincating" bug which I experienced for almost 2 months like here https www havenandhearth com/forum/viewtopic php?f=47&t=79371 ). Sometimes (1 out of 100 times) I even can start game with "play" button - but then endless "waiting for map data" message appears. I can open inventory TAB and see stuff in there (or see many question marks in the inventory after deleting cache? - not sure)
I tried all this DNS IPv4 8.8.8(4).8(4)/1.1(0).1(0).1 IPv6 2001:4860:4860::8888 stuff on my PC, reinstalling jdk and jre as mentioned, new drivers for nVidia 551.86 (AMD is a different brand and I don't need it, right?)
I would think that it's because of my internet provider but it's all the same when using phone hot-spot which is defferent company. I even tried to use a free vpn proxy on my phone.
I didn't recompile anything or use -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true JVM arguments as I don't know how to do it and where to put it.
my friend started experiencing all the same issues too but we didn't try anything new on his laptop yet. Although we have the same providers on wi-fi and phones.
As of now editing I think I should mention that I experience huge lags on forum - sometimes page stops loading text - I didn't see this thread for this reason for example - had to F5 few times to see it. But I'm not sure it was so bad always...

Guys, devs has nothing to do with network issues you are facing, same true for hetzner hosting game servers are hosted in.
You know that your network is constantly blocked by your government, there's also sanctions for unjustified unprovoked war your country wages, which might block some access to resources as well.

In order to login to the game, your computer must be capable of establishing connection with endpoint game.havenandhearth.com using UDP protocol with port 1870.

Worth to mention, devs previously stated they don't have any interest in enforcing any sanctions against players from russia, so there is really nothing can be done to help you, unless you create your own haven game "zavlekatelno i tochka" or something.

That's quite a definitive description, Fostik, thx! I contacted my internet provider if it could etablish such a connection. Will wait for specialists to contact me.

Forgot to mention, auth endpoint uses 1871 TCP also.

Re: can login after server bugfix

Postby Gravierra » Fri Jun 13, 2025 1:13 pm

The guy checked the local connections first - everything is fine, as expected. He said that one of his clients had a similar problem with one particular site, but the problem resolved itself after about three days. Now he forwarded my case to other guys to check the connection to the "last mile" with game.havenandhearth.com or something like that. While I was looking for a solution, I realized that enabling the VPN with a hotspot on my phone does not force the PC or laptop to use this VPN (it was not obvious to me, I am not a hacker at all). So I tried to connect to forums or download the client from the phone with the VPN - everything works like magic and smoothly! But how do I install the VPN on the PC so that the H&H client can use it? Installing it in the browser is the peak of my confidence. For example, I downloaded the Hiddify installer to try it, but Windows 11 does not allow me to install it. Any advice with free VPN?
Also I'm using the phone now to read and post messages here as my browser can't load more than 2-3 posts because of my current issue..

Here's something that has relatively low chance of solving the problem, but if that is the specific issue you're having, it can be very hard to detect/realize. And it helps to eliminate it as a possibility.

https://www.howtogeek.com/27350/beginne ... osts-file/

Basically, some times in the past, you may have entered a "manual override" for resolving DNS with HnH website/gameserver/res-file-host. This works fine until the DNS changes and your computer starts throwing errors with no indication that it's trying to connect differently than with everything else on the internet, that still works. Just make sure you have no web addresses, related to Haven, in there.

(If you are certain that you have never edited this file, you can skip this. However I had this problem with one machine and I had no idea that such a thing even exists, but apparently I did the "manual override" in the past and completely forgot about it.

Installing VPN on browser will only enforce browser to use VPN tunnel for all its connections, so website visits only, other applications like game client running on your computer won't use this tunnel, you'll have to install VPN that works globally on your operation system.
