Terrible Optimization Into Crash

Postby Jesus_Smith_Nandez » Wed Sep 23, 2015 8:29 pm

So recently, while playing Haven, my computer has occasionally suffered a system wide slowdown for a couple seconds, before freezing and crashing. Every once and awhile I'll get the slowdown, but the PC will recover. I thought this was a hard drive issue, so I replaced the hard drive with another one I have laying around last night and tried again to test it. After an hour or so, the same system-wide slowdown happened, and the computer froze and died.

This morning, the same thing happened, but within a few seconds. I decided to try to check the load and temp of my CPU in Speedfan, and saw that as soon as I launched Haven, my CPU usage skyrocketed to 100% usage on all four of my cores, and stayed at upwards of 80% for the whole time I was playing until my PC crashed again. The temps weren't terrible, sitting at 51C.

I was expecting the game to be badly optimized, but the fact that Haven, with it's modest graphics, stresses all 4 of my cores at 100% constantly while playing to the point that my PC crashes and it may cause permanent damage is absolutely unacceptable, especially after I paid money to continue playing.

I tried testing this in other games, specifically games that should stress my PC more that Haven, including AC4, Witcher 3, and Killing Floor 2, and none stressed my CPU as much and none ended in a crash.

Relivant PC info:
AMD Athlon 860k running @ 4.0GHz. I've overclocked it before but it's been at factory state whenever the crash happened.
CM 212 EVO CPU cooler
AMD R9 285, not overclocked except for a fan profile
Single 1TB Hard drive

Fix this shit J-Lo, or at least have it not crash my whole fucking computer.

Haven & Hearth, mysteriously breaking your internet and processor since 2009.

Seriously, H&H has left quite a bit of havoc in its wake.
Come back two hours earlier.

Are you sure it's hnh causing 100% CPU usage? Did you check in task manager which procceses consume that much CPU power?

Switching client to Amber, turning off every single graphical option and underclocking my CPU seems to fix a bit, but I'll see if it ends up causing a crash later. Still fucking dumb tbh

It was stable beforehand

That doesn't really say anything. The game shouldn't use 4 cores to 100%. I think you have something else running in the background eating a good portion of CPU and hafen finishes it off

edit: changed should to shouldn't

Then why the hell would the usage be 0-10% then spike to 100, when the only thing that changed is my launching Haven?

Just to create some more information going around, your GPU is of AMD origins, correct?

Just to help yourself (and me, and everyone I play with or at least played with), can you take the risk of going in-game and checking up the GPU usage while moving traveling from one chunk to another?
I've been testing out a lot of things recently but I need conformation from someone else, because it seems like the game (or java?) flat our refuses to use the GPU (AMD only!) for the rendering thread, and as such falls back to using the CPU. Understandably this is a big issue because the game renders things outside of camera vision and further.

The game can, I'm sure, be optimized in several ways, but there is nothing material here to investigate.

Not a bug.

Asked loftar to chime in. He might.
