odd mineing collapse?

All I did was mine one wall and it made this snake looking pattern inside. Was this supposed to spawn a troll or something but failed to do so or is it intended?

That's intended, not a collapse. Sometimes you reveal these open areas when you mine a wall.

I have seen such a gallery opening back into the cave some 20 tiles away, this should be checked for so that it stops one tile before. Else one would ask why one hasn't seen the opening before.

I have to agree with this. I had no idea that was even a thing and it seemed like a rather lackluster find for such a cool thing to happen.
