The worst monsters in the Hearthlands warp the fabric of space and time...

Character is stuck between a cliff and a hard place (tree)

Postby LilyMama » Sat May 13, 2017 11:10 am

This is the second time this has happened to me, so filing as a bug. :( Using Amber client, but the client from the website has the same issue.

When ascending/descending a cliff, if your character lands directly adjacent to a tree (presumably also a rock, etc.) they will get stuck there, unable to walk from their position. They can spin around in circles ineffectively, they can chop down the tree, but they're still stuck and can neither go around the obstacle nor can they re-descend/ascend the cliff. (Unless I'm missing a cluebat, PLEASE let me know if this is the case!)

Here is a screenshot of my current predicament:

You CAN warp to your hearth fire to get out of this situation, but that really sucks when it's light years away. :(

Any ideas? Is there any way to adjust your character's starting position, even by 1-2 pixels? That's all it would take.

Ha. As normally happens when I ask a question online, I figured out a workaround very shortly thereafter. :P

If you "Adventure" > "Destroy" the stump, it'll turn into some harmless wood blocks and then you can proceed. Still, though. It would be great if the maps were generated such that this "trapped" situation wasn't possible.

I'd agree that the game shouldn't let you ascend into this kind of position. There shouldn't be anything forcing you to hearth out that happens as a natural thing.

You can also destroy the stump.

Lets just say you forgot your waterskin, or ran out of water and are going to get more. Nope, that stump isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

There's ways out of it, but the easiest one is still "hearth home", which feels wrong. At least you should be able to climb back down.

Well, you could twiddle your thumbs for 5 minutes (more?) while your stamina regenerated over time.

Yeah, i know, i was just giving him options.
I guess these small issues are not easy to address cause they are related with the map generation vs hit boxes/collision.
Probably the easier fix should be that objects, such as trees,etc... should never spawn near cliff,water,etc...so setting a minimal tiles distance between some kind of objects.
That's all i can think about, but I don't know anything about how it works for real, so probably only Loftar knows, and I guess he is already aware about those things.
There are plenty, like mines on cliff you cannot enter,etc...I remember a lot from W9, idk if some of them have been fixed with W10.

Making it so that ascents can be blocked is problematic in its own right. Player has several recourses, including teleport to hf and destroying the stump. Not a bug.

Would it be reasonable to check the climb (or drop if this is possible on a descent) for character placement and block the climb if no/not enough room is available?
