Coracle Pick Up in Deep Water

Postby Nightdawg » Sat Sep 02, 2023 8:36 pm

Hello.

If you try to Pick Up a Coracle in Deep Water, you have two scenarios:

1. If your cape slot is empty, the coracle will be instantly picked up in this slot.
You are now swimming in deep water, and you can't drop the coracle back, because you can't click to pick up items from your inventory or equipory or directly drop them (ctrl+click) while swimming.

2. If your cape slot is not empty, the coracle will be picked up and held on your cursor.
You are now swimming in deep water, with a coracle on your cursor. You can only drop it back in the water, since you can't place it from your cursor into your inventory or swap it in the equipory while swimming.

Here's a video showing both scenarios, in your vanilla client: https://youtu.be/VJrJzUX0zY0

Scenario #1 doesn't seem like the intended behavior to me. We shouldn't be drowning with a coracle on our back.

EDIT: So to clarify, you should NOT be able to put it on your back while you're in deep water either.

Thanks.

I wish I weren't so stupid so I'd understand the 7d chess strats that spawn posts like this.

After some months of working with Loftar's code base you start testing out some really weird things, just for fun, and you stumble upon some bugs every now and then.

When you add features to your client, you find lots of unintended crap, like the server refusing to inform your client of some specific stuff only in super niche scenarios.
You either work around them, or, if it's impossible to do something about them, you completely ignore them.

This particular one can kill someone in the dumbest unfair way I can currently think of, no matter what client they use. Same as that one bug where you jumped off a cliff into water before learning swimming, and your character got stuck forever and you died. That one got "fixed" 5 times haha.

Core issue was that because you could drop and board a Coracle too fast, it became PvP mandatory to have one at all times. Because dropping and boarding are also flower-menu actions, they are overtly punishing to people with high ping.

The band-aid fix to this was to put a hourglass in boarding action.

I'm probably fighting "band-aid mechanics" with "band-aid mechanics" but what if:

*You can instantly board coracle like other boats by right-clicking when it's in water.
*Coracle needs to be (A)dventure -> (L)ifted to the ground in order to be picked up.
*Picking up a Coracle and dropping down a Coracle will both have short hourglass.

Optional: Special "carry" slot for coracle or skis: when you have something in "carry" slot, you can't lift anything. (Or maybe not, I was thinking that some kind of downside is needed for ability to carry vehicles and my first idea, movement speed penalty, felt that it would just ruin Coracle completely by making it a noob trap to carry one and be even less capable of running away.)

They should not be a physical object in the world, just an animation/speed change for people wearing them. Skis should be same.

Guys you're missing the point

If your cape slot is empty, you can pick up your own coracle in the middle of deep water and you can't place it back.

This isn't a suggestion thread lol

I understand your point and don't think you should be allowed to put it in your inventory from your cursor while swimming. It is not a bug. It's doing exactly what you'd intuitively expect it to do based on other mechanics.

It's obviously bad tho, hence the suggestion

My point is that you shouldn't be allowed to put it on your back either. Cause you can't fucking drop it back lmao

Being able to pick up gobs that turn into invobjs while swimming is consistent with other mechanics, and your coracle being auto-equipped when picked up is also consistent with other mechanics.

Absolutely nothing that's happening here is a bug or unexpected
