I can say that dowsing rod gives a lot of false alarms, or it require you to dig into ground. I found two spots that with great precision and was unable to place well, despite trying to spam it on every tile there. It said water is too deep.

One of my buddies was able to find well spots, he said the dowsing rod worked for him, but literally EVERYONE ELSE I've ever spoken to says they can't get it to work.
I'm in desperate need of a well and I don't have the patience to click tiles one by one to find one!

I've actually tested this. I must have cleared away over 200 units of dirt, and I still couldn't build a well there. I think "The water runs too deep" is just code for "Keep looking."

Wait, a thought just occurred to me... does the quality of the dowsing rod effect how easily you can actually find the wells?

If it works like legacy, you need to triangulate a well location. Water too deep is no water here. The quality of the dowsing rod should make the indicator smaller. I did find a well location with a 4 dowsing rod.

The method I do:
Use rod
move 4 tiles in the indicated direction
if the same indicator, move 4 more tiles
if differerent, place a flag
move 4 spaces in a perpendicular direction
repeat until multiple flags in close proximity

I gave this a try for about 30 minutes, to no avail. I would attempt to place a well near the clusters of flags, but each time I got "The water runs too deep." I never even once saw the blue circle.

I will attempt again when my patience returns.

Also, just to clarify: When you say to move in a perpendicular direction, you mean perpendicular to the direction the dowsing rod is indicating, right?

And what about when standing in one spot, the dowsing rod will indicate SEVERAL different directions?

Tried to find a well today... the rod gived me some information about where spots may be (direction was changed near this location), but if i stay too close to the tile where i was directed - the game begin to give me a message "The water table is not rising any further from here"... seems that i get this messages when i actually stay in the tile, in which i can build a well. But the well can't be placed - game says that water is too deep :(.

Some screens attached - the flag is on that tile.

Also - i spammed something like a minimup with well-building button without any good result... Is there anybody, who was able to build a well after the last update?
