Maybe the system needs to account for bad luck.
"Since all men count themselves righteous, and since
no righteous man raises his hand against the innocent,
a man need only strike another to make him evil."

By no means claiming perfection.

The problem with the system is it doesn't matter to you at all when you're consistently (thought randomly) getting plenty of experiences, but its the most stressful and miserable thing ever when you are trying everything you can think of and can't manage to trigger one. There is currently no middle ground where its a meaningful, interesting mechanic to work around.

I disagree with the totality of that statement, but I agree that somewhere in that direction lies a worthy subject for meditation.

I think the issue here is the preconceptions of some of this. What I saw above

"I stood under a willow for 30 minutes"

You can't just stand there. It triggers when you approach or interact with the tree (not sure which).

"Click the item 50 times"

If I get this system correctly, brute-forcing experiences like that won't work. Some amount of time needs to go by before trying the same thing again. Not enough is really known yet. Yet there are plenty of times where I've gotten two or three small experiences one after the other. I will note that I haven't been playing much, so offline time may have an effect on it, but I doubt it from reports I've read of people walking around with 7 and 10k XP.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

That resolves the issue then. Locking.
