Its not about sleep; Haven has already eliminated that for me. Its the 10+ hours I have no access on a typical day.

Jorb, why must steelmaking fail (as in, requiring another 56 hours without a single failure) if not attended to for a certain amount of time in the first place? It's a completely unfun game mechanic to be forced to login at least once every 12 hours, and it makes things impossible if you're unable to play for any 12-hour period during the 56 hours (going to an event somewhere, working overtime, going somewhere with friends or colleagues directly after work, sleeping in and almost being late for work, etc).

If you think of a better challenge to making it, do let me know.

How about just making it lose progress while out of fuel? For every hour without fuel, you lose an hour of progress. For harsher punishment, make it lose progress faster than it gains progress when fueled. Anything is better than instant reset to 0% the moment it's without fuel.

EDIT: For further punishment, you can have the quality drop slowly while it's in the crucible without fuel.

Instead of making it a challenge of IRL time management, have you considered a minigame that requires concentration for the first X minutes when lighting the crucible? You could then let it be loaded to full burn capacity, but each crucible would require X minutes of concentration to light?

This does require a lot more dev effort obviously, but some kind of temperature management game where you're trying to get the steel to just the right temperature before setting it to cook would seem immersive enough (only in pseudo logic I'm guessing, doubt it has anything to do with IRL steel making). Scoring badly could trash the steel quality.

This would open up wallgrade steel to pretty much everyone to make, but high grade steel would require concentration and possibly skill depending how well the minigame is designed. The alternative, if you want wallgrade steel to still be a pain to make, would be a minimum score to get the crucible to light successfully at all.

Just add heat mechanic. If the fuel is above 60% then heat is slowly increasing. If the fuel is below 40% then heat is decreasing. The higher the heat, the faster steel is being made. Have it balanced so that increasing heat from 0 to max takes a long time (like 24h), so that running out of fuel and heat would greatly slow down the process, without completely resetting it.

Please no reaction time or twitch miningames.
