At times you want to build structures that are bigger than the space you currently have between supports, so one might want to replace wooden supports with stone ones. Or simply fix a placement mistake.

No materials are returned when destroying a support.

Does clearing a cavein recavein the area if not supported?

Would be nice to be able to get rid of them in their entirety after you've mined out an area, they look ugly and they get in the way and have no further use after you've mined out all the ore in their vicinity. One might argue they are still needed to support the mine but aesthetics > realism imo.
