Mining natural gallery breaks suspension of disbelief

The worst monsters in the Hearthlands warp the fabric of space and time...

Note that the idea is not that you "discover" a pre-existing gallery, but rather that the cave collapses some way ahead because of your digging.

That would explain it. I also wondered if this was a bug.

Well, that's not how it works, though. They are calculcated when generated, and before that they don't exist, so what you are asking is not possible.

Then the code which calculates them needs to be changed so it stops before breaking a tile which has already mined out neighbours in the 4 cardinal directions.

As it is now it makes me (in perspective of 'my character') feel 'stupid' because I havn't seen the gallery before, and they usually spawn for me in ore areas which I just supported all around so I can mine the area, destroying resources needlessly.

Loftar, you realize that it does the exact opposite of that?
A cave collapse usually fills the cave with matter, this does the opposite.

Should you change it that the resources inside the wall (incl. curios) are dropped on the generated tiles, I would be ok with the feature.
As it is now, I just hate it and perceive it as broken.

perceive it as broken.

agree. it doesn't feel like a collapse at all because we already have collapses with falling boulders. "some way ahead" would be fine, but it's pretty strange that it could collapse unmined regions, surrounded by mined tiles ("some way behind") that are even covered by supports.

Another case of Natural Gallery malfunction:
gallery_madness.png

Yellow: tile mined
Green line: gallery opened
Red stars: Tiles that 'opened' into already existing space, completely breaking suspension of disbelief

In case the tiles at the red stars would have stayed as void ones I would say:
OK, reasonable, shitty that the ore is gone but maybe even mildly interesting as an event, please spawn glimmer inside when you vanish ore like this.

But that these solid cave walls the character walked by 30 seconds ago (on his way to mine the tile at the yellow circle) vanished is a defect in the mechanic (and I don't care about it being a programming or design flaw) as it fails reasonable expectations about the world the hearthling exists in. Mainly that the hearthling has eyes and isn't the intelligence level of a petrified slug.

Loftar, please fix it so that these 'Natural Gallery' can't open into already explored space.

I'm glad we can all agree that this wonderful mechanic shouldn't change in the slightest.

No.

Also no.

Come on Jorb, you work hard to make the world beautiful and then you'll let something exist that throws the player out of believing in it?
