We have one set of int gear for all our characters, and it consistently works fine studying up to 50 int more than it actually has.
And yes, whilst my question was a bit "sassy," I was asking a legitimate question... and you gave a legitimate and interesting answer, thank you.

I literally had an alt with 15 int that was studying items bigger than 15 weight, ie. ivory figurines, bear teeth. And no, I didn't keep the int gear on. It got over 100 surv in a couple weeks with that 15 base int. I only just fed it yesterday, its int is much higher now.

Maybe the functionality was reversed?

yep been testing it on alts you guys are totally right that it can be done now, must have been stealth reversed at some point and not put in patch notes, sorry for assuming that wouldnt have gotten reversed.
