He cannot hit what he is not seeing. Your horse will need to go fast.

No dude you should have plenty of time to get away with the horse when it spawns but you are absolutely correct about the pathfinding, it's so easy for anything to get stuck on shit and trolls are no exception and in the likely event it does get stuck while chasing you and uses a range attack, you're kind of fucked. No argument there.

has anyone tried carrying a toad/rat/chicken to drop while running away? does he squish them?

or the diagonal wall slip thing for cave walls? i don't think a troll can chase through that and probably stops him from throwing boulders. if works you could probably fight like twitch fighting

I got really lucky when I spawned one, I ran through a one tile narrow path and it got stuck on a support. It broke the support and ended up causing a cave in that stopped it from pursuing me. Still threw some boulders at me but I was far enough away that after I got knocked out it just dropped aggro.

Mining near a minehole pretty much guarantees your safety. If you have never seen a troll before you'll get aggrod by a question mark for a few seconds while it starts rendering so don't wait around just run. It shakes its fists for about 10-15 seconds or so before chasing you. Mining while on a horse is also another way to ensure your safety.
