If this needs to be solved, this would clearly be the proper solution, but it's not totally trivial to implement, and I can't really say I consider it a big deal, so I think I'll save that to a rainy day.

The only real "inconsistency" is, in my mind, indeed the boat thing, and as Jorb says, that should if anything be solved separately in some other way.

The flaw of the current mechanic is that you can speed yourself up by lifting stuff.

Everyone knows that by lifting your feets in the air there is less friction than what pushing a wheelbarrow would generate.
Thus it is faster to lift them and run than push them.

Characters move faster when they carry stuff, you should be able to see that quite clearly when moving around with a lifted display sign.
