Better to steal cupboards than individual items

The worst monsters in the Hearthlands warp the fabric of space and time...

I'd say just more damage based on the containers slots (no matter if empty or full).
Make friends with the other crabs or try to escape the bucket.

The point of the damage was never to hurt the player, but to introduce some sort of scarce resource so that you couldn't spam scents until you crashed the server.

Doing the suggested change is more work than it's worth. Also, the problem isn't that big of a deal. Won't fix.

Could make it so stealing items from a container has a chance to cause SHP damage, so it's effectively rarer than stealing a container. I don't think that would enable server-crashing.

This would be a buff to raiding, I guess, but the SHP damage is definitely something you have to play around during a raid. If the intention wasn't to be noticeable, I don't think it'd be unreasonable. During raids people will bash houses/towers and wait for their SHP to regenerate since they don't want to get fucked by stealing damage. Though the blood-spurt when you mis-click a wheel-barrow is funny, it's just another thing vandal alts are useful for.
