Wouldn't a driver crash cause a BSOD rather than a black-out like an overheating shutdown?

Not necessarily. Driver crashes under win7 and newer tend to just cause the application to shut down. It's gotten better (for the most part) with each version. A bad driver can be the cause of an "overheat" situation, or cause an "overheat" shutdown when there isn't really an issue. Power supply issues can cause the same thing.

Did you set the java vm executable to use the dedicated graphics? It's a required step for NVIDIA switchable graphics, probably the same for AMD.

Power off sounds like power regulation or emergency thermal shutdown when it hits tjmax. Moving off integrated might help the latter

With ATI, you don't need to bother. OpenGL commands are processed by the dedicated GPU like their supposed to be. If you have Nvidia, see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=50999
