Have you tried with a custom client ? Edit the run.bat with a new line (Enter) containing just the word: pause

pause lets the cmd window stay open for possible error messages (right click on topbar lets you choose editing)

it might help circling in the problem you have

Is your windows 7 the 64 Bit version? check whether you have 64 Bit Java installed (C:\Program Files\Java)

don't even know if anyone is gonna respond at this point bc i don't know how forums work, but the graphics card finished updating, and that did not fix the issue. renaming the data folder didn't work, running a custom client didn't work, and no error message pops up on that cmd window you were talking about. i feel like i've tried everything at this point, and i don't understand why it just stopped working randomly yesterday after working 100% fine for 4 days. if anyone can think of another solution to help me, it'd be much appreciated. i run 64 bit and already have the most recent version of 64 bit java installed. ask me any other information you need to think of a solution.

If you downloaded Amber to try that, change amber's run.bat to say "java" instead of "javaw" this should (I think?) launch with a developers console that might also have some troubleshooting info. Barring that, if you use Discord I could help you run a client version with more robust debugging to see which step of the game initialization it's breaking on.

running it with "java" instead of "javaw" did bring up a separate window that (i think?) is an error. it says

java.util.prefs.WindowsPreferences <init>
WARNING: Could not open/create prefs root node Software\JavaSoft\Prefs at root 0

I get the same with Ardennes but my client works normally. That error is a red herring, IMHO.

What I noticed is that the clients seems to hang a moment when logging in (after clicking a character), I guess white stuff is loading. So in case your machine has problems in that regard it might hang indefinitely.

As you did play on that machine till you couldn't... Possibly something changed on your system, like an update or stuff you installed.

I sent him a standard amber hafen.jar with some debug lines added in to see which step it hangs at, and it let him log straight in. Literally no idea why.
