I really couldn't tell you what, if anything, they do differently. The two effective techniques I know are to get a small group and spam punch it or use the effective melee combat actions such as sideswipe (or others) to quickly make openings, and then chop for a good half to 3/4 of its hps (or something like that) to make it immediately submit. (A third is to just armor up and take it like a man... shields are cheap to make.)
Wish there was a better taming mechanic myself. This one seems... wrong. I feel like I need to call PETA or something.
