Thankyou for your very lengthly and detailed response strpk0. This one reply is probably the MOST useful page I've seen so far, and that includes both wiki sights on the topics where I was searching. I hope it is a great help to others in the future. Maybe we can even fix the wiki pages or get a new player guide going.
ah, but I also just found this guide while searching.http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40714 seems sevenless made a beginner guide. only found it due to google search, I didn't find it when searching the forum directly.

So am I back?? we'll see. The challenge still draws me, but the "value" of the game has been mostly shattered for me. If I do, it will be because of Amanda44's conversations and some Real people from work.

The sevenless guide is great but very out of date. Use it to get a general idea of the game but keep in mind LOTS of stuff has changed.

If I were you I would focus first on collecting lots of bones, strings, and leather. These are the main things you'll need for a claim+palisade. This way you don't have to worry about having the same problem you had last time.

The bones and strings are easy.
Strings(roots, nettles) can be found on the ground with the foraging skill and exploration ability
Bones can be found on chickens and rabbits

Leather is the main issue but you only need 10
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Leather
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Prepared_Animal_Hide

For claim you'll need 4 bones and http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/A_Beautiful_Dream!
And http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Yeomanry

For palisade you'll need 50 strings(5 rope), 10 skins(10 leather), and 20 bones(4 bone glue)
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Bone_Glue
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Rope_Twining
http://ringofbrodgar.com/w/index.php?title=Legacy:Leather_Working&redirect=no

Wiki for both:
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Personal_Claim
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Palisade

And with any luck you'll find most of these items laying around on some abandoned place. Just keep in mind you have to discover them naturally at least once to unlock the recipes.

Also, PM'd you my hearth secret so you can ask me questions in game

Remember you can turn one hide into 4 hide strips, which counts as string. Also say a hide takes up 4 units (2*2) of space, it is considered 4 "patches" of hide, so you can make 16 hide strips from say, one boar hide.

I give it about 2-3weeks then he'd be dead and quit again.

Seems like you missed sticky called H&H Guides in How Do I.

Well, colour me surprised. Usually they don't come back after the barrage of "haha wow uninstall and kys nub, lrn2read". Most people here are pretty good at the game so it's easy to forget what it was like when we first started.

The wiki and some of the guides are pretty outdated. Particularly the front-page of the wiki. Half of the links there are for legacy only concepts, I think that confuses quite a few people.

I'd suggest joining a village. Gives you a more or less safe place to learn the game and a few village mates to answer any questions. Vidarrheim abbey is a good one, newbie focused and pretty well established, but I'm a bit biased on that.

 ummm well yes, I didn't see that post at all. I will attribute that to link overload when looking at the forum. ;)

As was also mentioned the legacy pages make things VERY confusing. Also endless reading forum pages means all that time is also not spent playing the game. Valuable, but NOT the desired medium from new player perspectives.
Especially when you add the legacy components. Read a page, then ask, does that still apply? is that still how things work? or was it right to begin with?
This is where an accurate wiki would be better, not a bunch of posts of "It looks like it works this way". I'm not detracting from those posts for discovering the information, but it's not really accurate as a "sticky" for real information, especially as a guide.
Just my observations/opionion. Again, NOT detracting from the efforts from those that discovered the information.
I think the better bet, would be to make sure wiki pages are updated, and credit the people that helped discover/confirm how things work. Then have the Wiki Stickied.

Thanks for all the positive and constructive replies.

It is literally the the top post in HDI.

Regarding the wiki: back when I started there wasn't really one and I think it was more fun to start the game back then as the struggle to figure stuff out is now basically gone.
